Loss of Access to the WordPress Back Office: First Checks to Perform

  • 10 June 2025

You’re trying to log in to your WordPress site, but access to the dashboard is denied? Don’t worry. This kind of issue can happen for various reasons, and the good news is that there’s often an easy fix.

Here’s a step-by-step guide that’s approachable even if you don’t have technical skills.

1. Check that you’re using the correct login URL

The standard login URL for a WordPress site is usually:

yoursite.com/wp-admin
or
yoursite.com/wp-login.php

If you’ve installed a security plugin like WPS Hide Login, the URL may have been changed (for example: /secure-login). Try to find the exact URL in your emails or by contacting your service provider.

2. Forgot your password? Use the reset option.

On the login page, select the “Lost your password?” option.
Enter your email address to receive a link that lets you reset your password.

➡️ Don’t forget to check your spam folder and make sure you can access the email address linked to your WordPress account.

3. Is your email address correct?

Sometimes, a change of email or a typo can prevent you from resetting your password.

➡️ Contact the person who created the site or another administrator to verify the information linked to your account.

4. Has your account been disabled or modified?

In some cases:

  • Your user role might have been changed (e.g., from “administrator” to “subscriber”)
  • Your account could have been accidentally deleted

➡️ If multiple people manage the site, ask another administrator to check your access permissions.

A plugin or theme could be restricting access

Sometimes, security or user management plugins limit access because of:

  • Multiple failed login attempts
  • Your IP address

➡️ Wait a few moments, try changing your internet connection (or use a VPN), then try logging in again.

5. A plugin or theme could be restricting access

Some security or user management plugins may limit access due to:

  • Multiple failed login attempts
  • Your IP address

➡️ Wait a few moments, try switching your internet connection (or use a VPN), then try logging in again.

6. Is the site still accessible?

If you cannot access the site at all (not even the homepage), it could be due to:

  • A hosting issue (unpaid invoice, server downtime, etc.)
  • A problematic update

➡️ Contact your hosting provider or the agency managing the technical side of your site.
